Different Calendars

Did you know that it's now February 12, 2553 in Thailand?

It sounds like we are way behind time or the Thai people are living in the future, right? Sounds like but not true. In Thailand, they use a different kind of calendar, that is called suriyakati or the Thai Solar calendar. Years are counted in the Buddhist Era that is 543 years greater that the Christian Era. So, 2553-543 = 2010.

Did you know that it's New Year's Day this coming Sunday?

Yes it is but only for Chinese people. Like Thai people, the Chinese follow a different calendar which is the Chinese Lunar calendar based on the cycles of the moon. Because of this cyclical dating, the beginning of the year can fall anywhere between late January and the middle of February. And for this year, New Year's Day falls on the 14th of February.

Interesting, isn't it? There are many other kinds of calendars that are currently used around the world. So be warned. Next time you make an appointment with someone make sure you are both using the same calendar.

This is a Mayan calendar. This is just to remind us that not all calendars are made of paper.

Note: You will find more information on this topic from Wikipedia.
